I called in & the agent refunded the extra year & gave me 2 months free subscription, but I sure don't trust them anymore & them billing the wrong credit card will cost me. The agent never apologized for what happened, so I'm doubtful it was an accident. I had McAfee for a couple of years, and I turned off the auto-renewal option, because I think it's overpriced, and the corporation I work for used Trend Micro for approximately 750 employees. Trend Micro allows you to protect up to 5 devices, and I've now protected my iPhone, my last computer which was a Lenovo that crashed and required replacement, and I now have Trend Micro on my Dell. Trend Micro also emails each user a monthly report of all of the scans conducted, and anything malware, viruses, and all other issues that could jeopardize security of personal information. To date, I've received two reports, and the 'heath' of both computers, Lenovo and Dell, are both safe and sound. It's actually the most effective software at the lowest price. I called it and it all seemed kosher until this guy said it wouldn't work and could he remotely access my pc as there were some problems with the settings and he could fix them. I thought this was possible since my computer was like new and I hadn't done anything to it yet. So he was bringing up all these complex looking system files one after the other and said that I had a serious problem, a few of them, firstly my IP address has been compromised, and that the settings showed a bunch of insecured violations from somebody who had accessed my computer and kept saying complicated jargon that totally freaked me out. My hair was standing on end!! He said he could fix it all up, and also give me another year of trend micro free for the bargain price of $299!! Isn't that wonderfully generous! I nearly swallowed my tongue, and just said, 'No I can't afford that.' He then gave me $100 off so a bargain price of just $199. I said I still can't do it, he basically just hung up on me. I spent the next few days trying to find out what was wrong with my computer, my IP address and wondering what the hell I was gonna do with this internet security that I had just wasted $40 on. I went on their site (not the one listed on the pack) and lo and behold the site looked different, the phone number was different. So I called them and they had no reference to me having ever calling and trying to activate my license, at all. I was able to activate my antivirus with no problem. I then told him about my experience and he didn't seem overly concerned at all. I had to really emphasize the fact that I purchased this pack from a very large, well known chain and it was obviously a scam. He asked me for the link address and once I told him said that it was an old expired web address that they no longer use. He really couldn't have cared less. I emphasized again that he needed to tell the manager or something. He said okay and hung up. I kept getting emails from Trend Micro, I'm not sure why but they were driving me crazy with them. I ignored them and finally after 2 weeks, for some reason it's asking me for the activation code again, like I never even had it, or purchased or activated. I had returned the pack to the store and they are dealing with the fake packs as well they gave me a refund, so I uninstalled it and will NEVER use it again or recommend it to anyone. VERY suspicious, it's possible the whole company (Trend Micro) has been compromised by either disgruntled ex-employees or employees who are moonlighting for extra cash. Dangerous anti virus, seems a new way of these scumbags to get to us and our hard earned money. I work 3 frickin jobs to make my ends meet, I don't lie and cheat and pretend to be someone I'm not. I no longer trust these Asiatic call centre types. They cannot be trusted. I had been a long time user of Trend Micro products. Because Trend Micro's antivirus protection was slipping and because their price per seat was rising, I went with Norton Antivirus. Well, guess what's been showing up on my PC and displaying unwanted popups, Trend Micro! I had run Revo Uninstaller and tried to get rid of them. They won't go away. Question, do you want to trust your data to a company that gets into your computer and won't go away? I no longer trust or respect Trend Micro. Trend Micro has been ripping us off for years. We just learned that Trend has been charging us for their Antivirus software renewals for 3 years even though we don't even own that computer anymore. It crashed 3 years ago under the watchful protection of their great software so there was no way to cancel the renewal that we unknowingly signed up for. This type of 'fine print' authorization should be against the law and Trend should be ashamed of scamming people that have not even updated their software in years. They lost a customer for life and I will trash them every chance I get unless they refund our money. Badly slows down PC, for few minutes after boot, the PC is effectively useless when TM starts. And the user is NOT able to kill TM process at that stage. Then when TM stabilizes it non stop eats ~ 50% of the CPU. The only way to make the PC functional again is to EXIT the TM (luckily at this stage this is at least possible). So in summary on the fly security protection is gone (after exiting TM) which denies the purpose of buying security SW for an online protection. But I must admit that at least the SCAN run manually yielded 100% clean PC so far. I contacted TM about the amount of CPU that it steals and I have received NO REPLY - They simply do not care! Someone with a computer name ** used my name, license number, etc. To install the software. I don't know this person and have never given my information out to anyone. TM customer service was EXTREMELY unhelpful in this regard - quite rude actually! Refused to issue me another license #. Also, the software is largely useless - lets hackers through Internet Security AND slows down my computer significantly. I changed my PW several times, with no effect whatsoever. I wish I could rate it a ZERO or even minus zero. I'm really not a fanatic of Trend Micro solutions as it has been proven to be ineffective with the latest 'crapware'. They are slower than competitors to post updates. And their management interface is user-unfriendly. One of my customers was infected by the latest 'Locky Crypto'.zepto which was attached as a ZIP containing a per destination Email address 'custom' base64 JavaScript to download the ransomware binaries in chunks in order to bypass Firewall protections. Once running on the client station it removes the shadow copy. In no way Trend Micro Email Gateway, End-Point, nor server protections was alerted that an end point was having a suspicious activity on server by systematically processing each directory and files the user has read and write access to. I'm even thinking that the virus execution was triggered when it was sent automatically to Trend Micro (Some files correlates with the time the encryption process has started). Now about security software in general: They should lock out a user which is bulk modifying or deleting files until an system administrator gives clearance. This would limit ransomware impact on a few files. Secondly, because Microsoft doesn't even comprehend the concept of sand boxing. However, I did find out, after being a subscriber for 4 years that I could have contacted them for help. I found out the hard way. I have been getting monthly reports from Trend telling me my PC is threat free. Yet I have been infected. Trend security has failed me miserably. I will not renew and most likely switch to Kaspersky's. Too much to explain here, other than NOT HAPPY with Trend's lack of customer care. I am unable to get to my Facebook account. Thanks to Trend Micro. I understand Facebook's concern over internet security but this is ridiculous!!! I already use Malwarebytes and I have no interest in using the other company. I let them scan the system for viruses but I think I made a mistake. When I had an online chat with a representative about the situation they wanted my phone number. That's when I knew the whole thing was a scam and I refused. I am not going to give them money for something I don't want!! Now I'm not sure what to do. The only times I had issues with this software was when I was renewing my subscription. For whatever reason the renewal either did not reload properly, or wanted to charge for another download. In each instance I communicated with the vendor and always had complete satisfaction with the fix. It was mostly annoying not trouble. After bad experiences with another brand I went with Trend Micro (was called Guard Dog back then) because of good reviews I had read. Trend Micro caught them all and always let me know what it was they stopped and provided a detailed report. In the early days the price was less than the competition with what I considered to be much better protection. Like I have said; never did I have any kind of malware get through to my system & I used this software at least 10 years, maybe longer. The only reason I stopped is in 2011, I went with a Mac system and did not feel it was necessary any longer. I considered it to be quality software at a reasonable price. I used my Windows PC extensively for both business and personal use and never had any malware that made it into my system. I never had to professionally clean my system up of unwanted programs either. I especially liked that Trend Micro did the work I needed it to do without being very intrusive like many of the competition. They're very helpful and knowledgeable but lack a sense of genuine concern. I would have rated them better, but recently they made changes which do not allow other anti-spyware systems on my computer. There is no single anti-spyware is going to, by itself, catch more than 70-75%. I want the flexibility of using other programs such as Malwarebytes. Alternative Activation Method With A Computer 1) First plug your magicJack GO device into any USB drive on your computer. 2) You should see a driver installation dialog box in the lower right of your screen – we can safely ignore this as it’s an automatic install of software. 3) You will see an auto-play dialog box with a button “Start magicJack” – go ahead and click that button to get the installation process started. Image 5: magicJack Software Application 6) The magicjack software interface should appear with a dial pad and various changing text – once the dial pad appears we will begin the registration of your device. 7) Look in the lower pane of the magicJack software application window for both a blue and purple area. The blue area (on the left side) offers you 30 minutes or 48 hours (whichever comes first) of outgoing calls to test the device. Click the purple area that says “Or click here to register now and get a phone number”. 9) A page will load within the software application with an offer to start a new account or use your to get access to and combine your existing account. If you have an existing account it is likely you will want to proceed with the magicJack login option but for today I’m going to stick with the process for new users that don’t have a magicJack login yet. To start your new magicJack VoIP account click the “create my account” button. Image 7: Create Your Account 10) The window will load a new page. Once there fill out your name, address, email and select a password. Make sure that it shows in the right hand corner of this page “device detected” with a green check mark and a picture of the magicJack GO. If not then something is wrong and the program shouldn’t let you proceed. Once finished filling this page out click the “create my account” button again and you will be brought to the next page. Image 8: Enter Your Details 11) On the next page you will name your device. This is of very little importance and can be anything that you would like as only you will see it. Once you have typed in your selected name click “Send my code” and magicJack will send an activation code to your email address. Image 9: Name Your Device 12) Check your email for the code (The email make take several minutes to come). Take the code and type or copy/paste it into the box on new screen that loaded in the magicJack interface. After that click the “Activate my device” button and magicJack terms of service will be uploaded on a new page within the software. Image 10: Enter Your Activation Code 13) After reading the or (this is very important as magicjack has some funky terms and conditions that limit your calls to certain numbers) click the “I Agree” box and then click the “Continue” button and you will move on to the next screen. Image 11: Accept The magicJack Terms of Service To Continue 14) At the next screen a popup will show up telling you that you have a $10 credit in “magicDollars” which can be used for a specific period of time for anything from international calling credit, porting your old number or selecting a custom phone number (if you want a specific area code check the magicJack area codes table I provide ). You can safely ignore and X out this popup for now as the credit can be used later. However if you want to port your number use the credit now by all means! Image 12: Free magicDollars!!! After X’ing the magicDollars options you have several other options on this screen for choosing your number – you can either select a FREE US Number or pay $10 for either a Canadian number, U.S. Vanity Number or to port your old number. There was also a free option for choosing a magicNumber but this was unclear to me and I am not exactly sure what it was for. Go ahead and choose the free magicJack number. After this choose your state, area code, and first four digits of your phone number. The key here is that you’re not restricted to the actual area where you live. If you live far away from most of your family and friends you can select a number back home and then your family can call you from across the country while avoiding long distance calling rates. You can select any phone number, with any area code and any first four digits that magicJack has available. The area code does have to match with the state that you pick of course. Once done with this click “Add To Cart To Continue” and you’ll move on to the next page. Image 13: Select Your Number 15) The next page is simply where you enter your 911 address. You can select from the drop down menu and the address you entered when first registering should appear as the only option. Select it if that’s where you are going to be using the magicJack GO device or you can add a new address if you will be using it somewhere else. If you are outside the U.S. no 911 services are offered and you will need to select that option. Once done with that click “Confirm” and you’ll get a confirmation screen to confirm that your address is indeed correct. Select “Yes” if it’s correct and then click “Submit” to move on to the next screen. Image 14: Select Your 911 Address 16) On the next screen you have the option to chose your magicJack service plan, but this isn’t recommend now as the magicJack GO already comes with a full year of free service and you aren’t offered any special rates to tack on extra service. You can select to extend for 1 year for $35, 5 years for $120 or set it to auto-new yearly. I highly suggest clicking “Skip For Now” and moving on. You can always add service extensions in the future once you are happy with the device and know you want to keep it for the long term. Image 15: Choose Your Plan 17) The next screen provides options for adding international minutes credit which again, can be done anytime. I also suggest skipping this and adding credit if you need to make international calls once you are happy with the device. MagicJack does offer super to hundreds of countries so this could be very useful down the line if you have friends/family overseas. Add minutes or again click the “Skip For Now” button to move on. 18) The next screen provides you a chance to review your order and shows everything that you will be getting. The total should be $0 if you didn’t add any extras to your account; such as porting your number or international credits. The things that should show up in your account are MJ 911 Service Plan, $10.00 in magicDollars, magicJackGo Standard Dialing Plan and U.S Phone Number – Free. Once finished reviewing everything click “Place Order” to move on. Image 16: Review Your Order 19) On this final screen you are shown your phone number and several options to proceed. Make sure to jot down your new number so that you don’t forget it. Then you can click “Close Window And Start Making Calls Immediately With Your PC” or if you are like most people and are planning to use your magicJackGO VoIP service without your computer you need to click the button “Click To Exit Application And Use Without Your PC”. Image 17: Your Order Is Complete 20) The application will return to the original dialpad screen that you saw when first starting but will show your address in the window pane below the dialpad. There will also be an option for voicemail now to the right of this address. The address area is important because there a tiny 911 symbol that will be yellow when you first register. Yellow means that the address hasn’t been verified and this can take several days to a week for magicJack to verify you address. If the symbol is black it means the address in not within the U.S. And therefore no 911 services are available. If it is red that means that magicJack has been unable to verify your device. In this case you should contact their. Finally, if it is green then your 911 address has been fully verified and magicJack 911 services are working. 21) At this point you need to remove the magicJack GO from your computers USB port and wait a few minutes for the software application to recognize that you have removed the device. Once it catches up to speed a white box will popup that says you need to insert your magicJack device to make calls. We will X this box and move on to setup magicJack GO to be used without a computer. Final Steps For Setup And Use Now that we are done with registration of the magicJack GO device using the installation software we need to get it running without the need for our computer. This is pretty simple and requires only a handful of steps. 1) Firstly, connect your magicJack Go to the power adapter using its USB port and USB cable. 2) Secondly, connect your internet modem or router to the magicJack Go device using the provided Ethernet cable, by plugging in each end of the cable to the Ethernet ports on both the devices. 3) Plug in the desired telephone to the magicJack GO device via the RJ11 phone jack port. 4) Plug in the power adapter to a power source 5) Make sure that the blue light is solid and the white light is blinking. 6) Your hardware is ready to receive and make calls over internet. You are now done and ready with a fully functioning magicJack GO. This may seem like a lot of steps but this is an over detailed guide to activate and register your device. The process is really super quick! I did it in under 10 minutes and you should be able to too as I’m no expert. Your Free $10 In magicDollars One last note about the $10 in magicDollars, from what I’ve read and seen online from videos it appears that the credit doesn’t show as a credit in your account when you login to your magicJack account but it is indeed there. Chris from “Laughter On Water” did a wonderful magicJack GO install video and at the end goes into detail about the $10 magicDollars after chatting with a support agent.
