The Remix is an inclusive youth performance company open to young people aged 11-19 both disabled and non-disabled from across the county. The Remix members include young people with physical and sensory impairments, young people with learning difficulties and non-disabled young people. This groundbreaking company began as a Cultural Hub project in 2007 when local schools highlighted the need for an integrated performance group. Seven years later The Remix has around 60 young people involved in the company and continues to produce fantastic, high quality inclusive performance opportunities for young people in Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset. As a result of its huge success Remix has now expanded into Remix East and West and Over the past 9 years Remix East has worked with top companies including CandoCo Dance Company, Graeae Theatre Company, Choreographer Freddie Opoku-Addaie, Cie Angela Laurier, StopGap Dance Company and Joli Vyann Theatre,Dance and Circus Company. In 0ctober 2010 Remix East took Bournemouth by storm and performed the first integrated flash mob in the South West in Bournemouth Square. Remix East also took part in ‘Breathe’: ‘Breathe’ was an event that opens the Olympic sailing events in Weymouth for the Maritime Mix Cultural Olympiad by The Sea 2012. The work was an Arts Council 'Unlimited' commission awarded to Diverse City who created and delivered the project. The final piece was a breathtaking outdoor performance of circus and dance performed by an outstanding and inspirational cast of 64 disabled and non disabled performers from Dorset and Brazil.This project also enabled some of the Remix company to travel to Brazil to rehearse the performance with their Brazillion counterparts. Remix East has also worked with French circus performers to help them develop their circus skills. The young people had an amazing time, developing a piece involving juggling,balancing and gymnastics.The piece entitled 'Balansera ' was written by a member fo the Remix company. This was all part of the PASS Circus Channel project, a ground breaking European funded Anglo-French contemporary circus initiative. 2014 saw a further development of the PASS Circus Channel project for members of Remix East and West when they worked together with Portrait Dance and young mucisians from schools across Dorset to make an outstanding piece 'Summer Sensation' which they went on to perform at the 2014 Inside Out Dorset Festival as part of the 'Up in the Air' events in Studland in September and again at the Circus Family Fun Day at Lighthouse Poole in October 2014. In 2016 Remix East performed in full costume as part of PDSW's Spring Review Show. Remix West is over years old and has already worked with musicians, theatre artists and choreographers including Jude Christian, Neil Paris, Johnny Hoskins, Trestle Theatre Company and Stuff and Nonsense Theatre Company. In 2013 they performed an outdoor piece at the Bournemouth Family Festival in Meyrick Park and Dorchester Festival. More recently they have performed a circus based piece at the Inside Out Dorset Festival in Studland as described above. Past feedback from parents and peers has been overwhelmingly positive, remarking on how well the project meshes together children of all backgrounds.In 2016 Remix West performed at Tachi Morris Theatre, Taunton as part of the Spring Forward youth dance platform. • • • • The Remix is managed by Activate Performing Arts. Both Remix East and Remix West have an Artistic Director and an Assistant Director. The Remix team includes qualified care staff who are on hand to assist at all residencies and workshops and a Project manager, based at Activate Performing Arts. It’s overall management is carried out by the Dance Producer at Activate, Michaela Shaw. The Remix meet in school holidays for Remix residencies and one Sunday per month throughout the year at locations in Poole, Bournemouth and West Dorset. This is a fully inclusive, friendly and creative company and are constantly recruiting for new members to join this exciting youth company.
